Meet Hamdia Ahmed, the First Muslim Woman to Wear a Hijab in the Miss Maine Pageant

“I slayed my hijab,” she wrote. For the competition, the 19-year-old wore a gorgeous gold long-sleeved robe with a crimson hijab, and for the suit portion, she wore a burkini with a black hijab. According to her Instagram, she used to be born in Somalia and raised in a refugee camp in Kenya.

“I wanted to try something new, and gain more confidence. I also wanted to inspire other girls who look like me to chase after their dreams,” she instructed World Class Beauty Queens mag about her reason why for collaborating. “Representation is so important. You can compete in a pageant even if you wear a hijab, burkini, or a long gown.”
